Conjunctions, oppositions, trines, squares, and sextiles: the angle between two planets totally shifts how you read your chart.
So far we've looked at planets, signs, and houses separately. But a birth chart isn't a checklist—it's a network of relationships. Aspects are the geometric angles that two planets form with each other as seen from Earth, and they tell us whether those two energies work together, create tension, or completely ignore each other.
The Major Aspects
The conjunction (0°) merges two planets at the same point: it fuses their energies into one intense force that's hard to separate—for better or worse, depending on which planets we're talking about.
The sextile (60°) is a gentle, fertile tension: an opportunity that takes a little conscious effort to activate, but flows smoothly once you put in the work.
The trine (120°) is classic harmony: the planets vibe naturally without any friction. It's raw talent—the catch is that when things come so easily, they sometimes never fully develop.
The square (90°) is active friction: the planets want different things and create internal tension. It's uncomfortable, yeah, but it's also the engine behind a lot of personal growth—we rarely change without a little resistance.
The opposition (180°) puts two energies face-to-face, on opposite sides of the chart. It feels like a pull between two equally valid needs, and the key is usually integrating both instead of picking a side.
Why This Changes Everything
A strong Mars by sign and house reads totally different if it forms a smooth trine with the Sun (action aligned with your identity, flowing) versus a square with Saturn (impulse constantly slamming against limits and frustration). Aspects are what give real texture to your chart—just knowing where each planet sits isn't enough. You've gotta see how they're actually talking to each other.
The Orb: Your Margin of Error
Aspects don't need to be perfectly exact to "count"—there's a margin called the orb (usually between 1° and 8°, wider for the Sun and Moon) where the aspect still works, though it gets weaker the further you get from the exact angle.
