In astrology, planets are the actors in the cosmic drama. Each one governs an area of your experience, and its position by sign and house in your birth chart describes how that energy expresses itself in you specifically. They're not "good" or "bad": they're psychological functions we all have, in different degrees and with different styles.
The Luminaries: Sun and Moon
The Sun is your conscious identity, your purpose, and the main character in your story. It's what people usually call "your sign." The Moon, on the other hand, is your inner world: emotions, instincts, the part of you that reacts before thinking. If the Sun is who you want to be, the Moon is who you are when nobody's watching.
The Personal Planets
Mercury rules the mind: how you think, speak, and process information. Venus governs love, pleasure, and aesthetic values — what attracts you and how you give and receive affection. Mars is your drive to act, your desire, and the way you fight for what you want.

Reading a planet in your chart isn't about parsing a single sentence: you have to cross three pieces of information — what the planet rules, what shade the sign it's in gives it, and what area of your life it affects according to its house. A Mars in Cancer in the 4th house, for example, doesn't fight the same way a Mars in Aries in the 10th house does. With this foundation, you can already start reading your birth chart with way more depth than just "your sign is whatever."
